Soup Kitchen

Akong Rinpoche (founder of the Rokpa organisation) suggested that it is very beneficial for anyone who is willing to work for the benefit of others. One of the simplest ways to do this is to provide food for those in need or support this work financially.

When we moved to our present premise in 2001, we were successful in securing a grant from the Community Fund to build a semi-professional kitchen in the basement. This has enabled us to be more efficient in providing for those in need, in a more professional manner.

Our soup kitchen operates on most Friday afternoons from 4-5.30pm, Saturdays from 11am-12.30pm and Sunday evenings from 6pm.

We buy most of our food from Fareshare who redistributes food from main supermarkets at a discounted cost enabling us to maximise the food we can afford to purchase.

Volunteers are needed to uplift food on Fridays from 12noon to 1pm, prepare soup, sandwiches and other food, clean and organise the kitchen and stores and distribute food to Cafe Simon on Fridays and Saturdays and we also have a street team for Sunday evenings from 8.30pm.

We also have regular fundraising events including collections at Glasgow Central, various ongoing events in the centre and annual events.

We have been given the opportunity to take part in the 2016 Forth Rail Bridge Abseil. We took part for the first time in 2015 and our eight volunteers were amongst over 340 intrepid volunteers who turned out to drop 165ft from the world-famous landmark in aid of good causes. Our eight volunteers raised over £3,600 for the soup kitchen this helps to pay for new equipment and to meet the running costs essential for this service to continue.
Each volunteer needs to pay £30 to register and commit to raising at least the minimum sponsorship of £160.
